Celebrating And Honoring Veterans

"At Greenwood Cemetery it has always been a tradition
to celebrate and honor our veterans "

Graveside Service

At Greenwood Cemetery it has always been a tradition to celebrate and honor our veterans with gratitude for their service to our country and for the ones who performed the ultimate service giving their lives to protect the precious freedoms of all American citizens. Here at Greenwood Cemetery, we honor the family’s wishes.

When making preparations to provide graveside service the Veteran's coordinator, in coordination with Greenwood Cemetery manager, networks with Mad River Honor Guard to perform full military honor service. The Honor Guard are volunteers who were honorably discharged. They wear the uniform of their former branch of service. Full military honors include rifle salute, flag presentation and bugler. Greenwood Cemetery will setup a U.S. Flag and the flag for the service member’s branch of service. There is no remuneration for this service.

Memorial Day

Our Annual Memorial Service

A day of remembrances for departed veteran’s and their families. It’s a time when we gather together to honor the fallen heroes of our country. “Remembrance Flags” are donated by veteran families; and are place at each veteran’s burial site with the help of the United States Coast Guard volunteers, veterans, veteran’s organizations and the community.

Fifty U.S. flags are raised 20 feet high, to create columns along the roadside entrance of the cemetery; including one Canadian flag. We also raise individual flags representing each branch of the United States military service; Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard.

Locating Veterans Burial Sites in the Future

The veteran’s coordinator keeps an eye on all-things veterans. Currently, Cal Poly Humboldt is working on a new software application project to help locate all United States Veteran burial sites using a new application called “GIS US”. This new application, when completed, can be downloaded to use on a cell phone.
